Memories of an old platform leading to National Taiwan University and dreams

Did you know?

National Taiwan University once had a real train station, which faced the main gate of the university. That was the Shuiyuandi Station.

After the ticket booths at Shuiyuandi Station were demolished, the area became a small plaza within the urban architectural space, located in front of the current No. 20, Lane 316, Roosevelt Road. This station was built during the Japanese occupation and was a stop on the Wanxin Railway. It opened on January 22, 1921, and the station building exit faced Taipei Imperial University (now National Taiwan University), which was founded in 1928.


The Shuiyuandi platform was located in front of the current Taiwan Railways Administration staff dormitory, near the side gate of National Taiwan University, making it an important transportation hub for many faculty and students traveling to and from the campus. In 1945, Shuiyuandi Station was upgraded to a third-class passenger and freight station, and remained in operation until it was closed on March 25, 1965. From the 1930s to the 1960s, this was the place where countless NTU students' dreams began.

A Legacy of History: From Fu Ssu-nien to the Centennial Celebration

In 1949, President Fu Ssu-nien encouraged teachers and students in his speech at the fourth anniversary celebration of National Taiwan University: "Cultivate moral character and study hard, love the country and love people."

The following year, President Fu passed away. During a school meeting, three professors proposed changing "力" (Li, meaning strength) to "励" (Li, meaning encouragement), which became the current motto of National Taiwan University.


"Cultivate moral character, encourage learning, love the country, and love others."


These eight words of wisdom have become the compass for NTU students in their pursuit of knowledge and practical ideals, and have been passed down from generation to generation.

In 2028, National Taiwan University will celebrate its centennial, and this generational value will continue to accompany every student on their journey through time.

New Platform: A platform shaped like a "heart," for every departure.

As time has passed, the Shuiyuan Station is long gone. But National Taiwan University still preserves a warm transit station for every traveler—the New Platform NTU Hub & Store.

New Moon Terrace is an open space where you can rest for a while, recharge, and continue your journey, whether you are a member of the university, an alumnus, or just passing by National Taiwan University.


You can come alone or with a few friends. Sunlight streams in, and outside the glass windows, you can see students and faculty coming and going, and the vibrant tennis courts. The atmosphere is somewhere between tranquil and dynamic, allowing your mind to flow freely. There are convenient power outlets and a friendly environment with no service fees. Simple, bright, and pure, just like the consistent spirit of National Taiwan University—a place where thoughts can settle and inspiration can quietly sprout.

Just like a century ago, the new platform welcomes every traveler.

The new platform shares the same mission as the water source platform a century ago—to receive travelers, scholars, and dreamers coming and going.

It is both a new starting point and a platform for the heart.
